In rural regions of developing countries, like Malawi, Sri Lanka and Zambia, impoverished children wake at 4 a.m. to finish their daily chores before they begin their more than 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) walk to school. Teachers say these students arrive at school already tired and preoccupied about their return trip home. In areas like this, where walking is the only mode of transport, bicycles are a catalyst to possibilities for children.
World Bicycle Relief is an organization with a mission to mobilize people and create a world where distance is no longer a barrier to education, healthcare and economic opportunity. They provide specially designed, locally assembled bicycles for students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs across Africa, South America and Southeast Asia. Their current campaign is focused on empowering girls.
Around the world, 29 million girls do not attend secondary school. In rural Africa, distance, inequity and early marriage stand between these young girls and their futures. A Buffalo Bicycle offers the real and immediate benefit of reliable access to essential goods and services. Prophet for Nonprofit: Employees Chip In For Charity Auction
Prophet’s mission is to build brands, transform businesses and move society. One of the ways that we do this is through our Prophet for Nonprofit program where we give back to the community by offering pro-bono consulting services, volunteering in local community service projects, and raising funds to support programs and initiatives.
Every other year Prophet hosts an internal online auction to raise funds to support a nonprofit that’s changing the world. Our employees nominate organizations that they’re personally connected with and the firm votes on which nonprofit we will donate to that year. In the past, the funds we raised built a kindergarten in Vietnam, sanitation facilities for 8 schools within Masindi district of Uganda and helped to fight the Ebola epidemic by equipping the Konobo district in Liberia with necessary equipment and supplies. This year, our firm chose to donate funds raised from our auction to World Bicycle Relief.
The P4NP auction isn’t your standard charity auction. Instead of seeking donations from clients and vendors, we tap into our employees own unique passions, talents and skills. Employees donate hundreds of creative goods, services and experiences to the auction – from dog-sitting to poker lessons, sprucing up a LinkedIn profile to taking professional headshots, baking a pie to knitting a blanket, and once in a lifetime experiences like taking your parents to dinner with the CEO, sight-seeing in New York City in a private plane or crashing the wedding of a colleague.
The auction is great community builder, a fun way to learn about fellow colleagues and shows what we can accomplish when we come together to achieve a common goal. In total we had 100 percent participation in our nine offices around the world. In total we raised $28,000, exceeding our goal by $8,000. Currently the World Bicycle Relief is sponsoring a year-end dollar for dollar matching program, which will turn our donation into $56,000 or 380 bicycles for girls to find a way forward!
